Hey everyone, Just realised that this blogging thing takes a lot more effort then I had first imagined so the next step for me is ORGANISATION. In future I shall be making sure that Im posting on a regular basis so theres something for you to keep you interested. 😉 Today I want to talk about the concept of using Pinterest. For me the web is so full of all these cool tools that people tell you about, and you barely remember the name and never know what its good for. So I want to introduce one of the coolest tools that I use for general inspiration and that is the awesome scrap book esque ability of Pinterest. Now this is not going to be a boring technical post about how you join the site, create a profile, and start using it as I found that whole process is pretty straight forward and you can easily ask Google to help you out there. However, what I do want to talk about is the simple yet amazing usage of this cool site. And for me in one word I use this site purely for INSPIRATION. Here is a link to my Pinterest, feel free to check it out: HERE If you look through my Pinterest page, you can see that I basically just use it as a collection of scrapbooks so I can research my outfits, looks, pretty much anything you can think of. The great thing about it is that it not only collects a set of images but also the links to say that dress, or those shoes which you can go back to at a later date. Another great feature is the search function allowing you to search for any number of subjects, plus when you do find something on another person account it allows you to check out their collection. So thats why I love using this site because it makes finding outfits and looks so so simple, and also helps me clear out my mind once in a while. Happy Pinning, and if you join feel free to add me. Sharing his caring.. xx
Today I want to talk about something that I would have to say lies at the very core foundations of being a transgender person, and very much defines the spectrum that exists in our community. The important question that you have to ask yourself is, how much of the illusion do I want to create, and not only create it but in a way master the art of the illusion.
To get into what I want to discuss, which in a way is mostly a visual concept, I wanted to create an image that illustrates what we as transgender have to face in terms of what we both want to achieve, as well as how the general population addresses gender and the idea of conforming to the black and white gender categories. There are friends that I have talked to about the idea that gender should not have to fit into either male or female, but for the purposes of this article, and the main challenge I am constantly trying to master I want to talk about how we want to achieve the male to female transformation illusion.
The background image shows a muscular male, overlaid with the body shape of a female figure. Guys come in all different shapes and sizes, depending on how much you weigh, how tall you are, how fit you are, how much time you spend lifting weights, etc. So for the purposes of the article I wanted to discuss the challenge of going from an archetypal muscular male guy to transform into a woman. And the first biggest challenge we face is the size of our body parts.
I first became aware of this size comparison when I was traveling in Asia. At the time I was with my ex- girlfriend and we were shopping at one of the many department stores. Theres something about me that when ever I travel I like to try to find t=shirts that have images or statements that are totally bizarre. The t-shirt I bought that day I would say was slightly on the girlie side, as it was black with a lot of pink foil writing on it, and featured a cherub angle sitting on the toilet, but thats a story for another day. Anyway, after putting the t-shirt on I noticed how the size of it around the mid chest region was much tighter then any shirts I’ve bought in the West. And having a lot of Asian transgender friends on facebook, it started to make me aware that the reason they look so great as girls is because their whole chest region is a lot smaller then western males.
Chest size is one of the key issues when dressing as a woman, as its something you are unable to truly alter. A mans chest of always going to be more wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, where as a woman’s chest is going to be smaller, and the opposite. So the best way to overcome this is through the use of appropriate breast forms. If you read through the entire article which I hope you will. You’ll start to understand that the key to the illusion is not only size, but also proportions.
In taking a logical path, the size of our waists is the next item that has to be taken into consideration. This is not something that is important purely in size, but in proportion. All men know that the ideal shape of a woman is the hour glass figure. A narrow waist emphasises their wide child bearing hips, highlighting their potential for fertility, Balanced with narrow shoulders that show a weaker more submissive strength. Now women, who are producing all their female hormones are getting their fat placed in all the right places, in general that is. Some women love to complain about fat going to all the wrong places, but for us males the majority of our fat goes straight to our stomachs.
The great tool we have to alter this part of our body is of course the corset. Ill go over more information about corsets later in the series but the basics are quite simple. The key to getting a good waist line is buying a steel boned corset that can pull in your mid section very strongly. I have purchased both an expensive corset from Vollers, and another from eBay. Admittedly I had to buy the second after losing a lot of weight, but Id honestly say that it does a much better job then the more expensive one. Another important consideration when buying a corset is to measure the length its going to have A. from your sternum to the top of your pelvic bone and B. the circumference the bottom will have around your hips. These two measurements are VERY IMPORTANT! I often wear my corset out to clubs, and find that if length A is too long, the bottom of the metal plate on the corset where the clasps run will dig into your pelvic bone. The circumference at the bottom is important too because if its too much when done up, it can create too much ruffled fabric under your clothing.
Hips and Butt
In this section I want to first openly discuss the reasons and then direct you to some experts that can help you create your own custom solutions. I have so far brought some products that have had some relative success with, but it all depends very much on what you want to wear, and how realistic you want to look.
We all know that men have narrow hips, and women have wide ones. The simple answer to this is for making babies. On the other hand, not all women have butts, so its up to you whether thats something that you feel is important to your look. The hips work in relation to the waist, and the ideal feminine waist to hip ratio is 0.7. So if you managed to use a corset to pull your waist down to 28 inches, then 28 x 0.7 = 40 inches for your hips. Most women tend to have hip sizes around 36 inches, but they tend to be smaller in size so having the smaller waist if easier for them to achieve.
I was going to go into depth about how you can create the perfect hips but the following videos show a number of different techniques. The reason why I don’t recommend you buying hip and butt pads, or pants is purely because the majority of those products are aimed at helping women boost what they already have. When it comes to the art of creating them from scratch we actually have to build up a lot more volume, and at the same time make it look seamless to our bodies.
This is one of the first videos I watched, and great to show you the whole cutting process.
This is a video I watched more recently. Different method but a more customisable approach.
This is the one I love the most. He emphasizes on the size and placement of the pad that needs to be created.
Okay, now you are all thinking why did I leave the face to last? Well in my honest opinion, the face is the easiest part to camouflage as opposed to actual physicality’s of your body. You can check out my previous article on finding the right wig, and style. The only other area you need to work on is make up. Depending where you are on the pathway, if you are just starting out Id highly recommend seeing a make up artist or having a make over and seeing the skills they are able to employ.
One of the best techniques you can use to help achieve more feminine features is contouring, and if you type that into youtube the videos are endless. Contouring works on both the overall shape of your face, and the facial plains, as well as shaping individual features. So you can search for contouring, or contouring eyes, nose, lips etc. Just remember make up can work wonders, and another key element that again can spark the illusion to a whole new level is the use of fake eyelashes! They can be a tricky thing to master, but like all new skills, practise can only improve your skills.
Limbs and things
This is the final section thats more like a miscellaneous section that rounds up all the other areas that need some attention. Okay so heres something about dressing that women will always be jealous of, you may know it already. Men don’t get cellulite! So our legs are always going to look streamlined, toned, and well defined. So nothing for us to worry about there. Other then the fact that we may need to spend a little more time shaving them. 😉
Our hands and feet tend to give away our gender at times, as they often are a little wider and less delicate. A way around this is again through camouflage, finger and toenails can be painted. Rings can be worn, and feet can be squeezed into shoes. When i first started dressing I rarely took any time to think about items like jewellery or the importance of accessories. Women have different mind sets to guys, and always focus on even the smallest of details. So always remember to think about both the picture as a whole, and the individual elements and how they all live together in harmony.
My only other thoughts I can add to this topic are skincare, and the scents that you wear. Obviously a woman has a lot less hair then a man, and whenever her skin is exposed she make sure its shaved and hairless. She also takes a lot of effort into keeping her skin soft and well cleansed. Plus most women you meet will have a typical scent that they love which either expresses their personality, or defines their favourite feelings.
Feel free to add any comments, and thoughts. I know I am constantly learning when it comes to the Art of Cross Dressing, and its only through practise, and talking to friends that I have come so far. Let this be a community that can help everyone grow on their pathway to finding their gender happiness.
Ok, so I have been AWOL, MIA, out of sight, missing, gone, etc. Well there is a reason for this. My first thoughts on making this blog were all planned out, and organised. Not to say that I have OCD, but when ever I embark on a mammoth task I love to make sure its planned out to the very finest of details. And in this case I forgot one vital element, and that is writing a blog not only takes planning, but a whole lot of time and effort.
So now that I am aware of this I’ve managed to find some time here and there to make sure it gets up and running again. Although the irony right now, I’m not even sure who is reading this blog. But who cares, Im doing it because I love talking about this awesome stuff! Stay chique my cyber T-girlies. 🙂
So the last post was about keeping smooth, well this one is the exact opposite, and is a very obvious element when it comes to looking like a woman. Speaking to a lot of my fellow girl friends there seems to be quite a mixture of responses when talking about how to get the right wig, so I will break it down into the most basic categories that I believe will guide you in finding the best wig to suit your style and look.
Ok, so I wanted to mention colour first because for me its one of the easiest aspects of buying a wig. First of all you have to remember that the easiest way to choose a wig is to go with the same colour as your natural hair. Why, because the colour of your hair has to work with the colour of your skin tone. For example, if you are quite tanned and choose a blonde wig thats in a cool shade, then that will create a shift in tones that looks wrong. Again the same applies if you have a cooler skin tone and you go for a warm tone wig. I could go into this in more detail, but in simple terms of fashion, tones have to match each other in order not to clash.
Another thing to remember is that when buying a wig you want to go for the most natural look, thats often what looks best in terms of natural beauty. So for example if you are of asian ethnicity, the dark black wig as a base will always look more passable then choosing say a bright red wig. Women can get away with this more because they are less concerned about attracting attention.
This is another key along with colour, its so important to make sure that you can match the style of the wig be it the length or actual design of the wig with the shape of your face. If you were to actually break down what hair really does, its basically there to create a frame for the face. So you can use the shape, style and length of the wig to help balance out your face and create the most appealing look.
TIP OF THE DAY – The easiest way to find a great wig style for you is to first find out which face shape you have, and then match it with a celebrity. That way you are able to find a modern stylish style that will suit you without having to go to the trouble of spending lots of time trying to find a wig that will. Bare in mind make sure the celebrities skin tone matches yours if you are going for the same colour style.
For triangle shape faces, your best style guru’s are Rhianna, Kate Moss, Michelle Rodriguez, and Renee Zellweger. A triangle face shape is defined by a strong prominent chin, and your facial structure narrows at your cheek bones and temples.
The best styles to suit this shape are zig zag partings, off centre parted styles, and if you go for a short style chose an asymmetrical bob, long at front and short at the back.
Women to follow with this shape are Penelope Cruz, Demi Moore, Jessica Simpson, and Angelina Jolie. This shape is defined by the width of your jawline, cheekbones and forehead all being balanced.
The best styles to suit it are longer styles to pull away from the jawline, as well as soft curls to soften the facial structure, along with asymmetrical styles and layering.
Celebrities to watch out for with this face shape are Jessica Alba, Liv Tyler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kelly Rowland. A long or oblong face is defined by the length of your face being much narrower in proportion to its width, and you may appear to have relatively flat cheekbones.
Best styles to suit you are, neckline length with width and volume at the cheekbones. A style that uses layering to add volume to your mid face, and side partings.
One of the most famous celebrities to have a heart shape face is Reese Witherspoon, along with Scarlett Johansson, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez. The signs of having a heart shaped face are shown by the upper half of your face being wider then the lower, and often defined by a pointy chin.
Styles that will suit the heart shape are wigs that offer a soft top layer, or ones that give you long and wavy layers across your cheekbones. Long hair with bangs also frames your cheekbones well, and jaw length hairstyles will help to bring attention away from your cheekbones giving the appearance of a fuller chin.
To get a great wig style for the oval face shape look out for Jennifer Anniston, Julia Roberts, Britney Spears, and Sharon Stone. If you have this face shape then you are blessed because the oval shape is the easiest style, and can almost pull of any hairstyle out there! The shape is very easy to identify by a soft rounding jawline and resembles and inverted egg shape.
The best styles for this shape are those that show it off more so then hiding it, tousled shoulder length hair, side parted bobs, and the pixie cut all work great. Hairstyles to avoid are anything that cut or hide the shape, such as bangs or dangling over your face.
And finally we get to the round shape, women may love this shape because it gives off a more youthful appearance and makes them look years younger. Celebrities with this face shape are Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Mila Kunis, and Michelle Williams. Defined by your face being almost as wide as it is long, lacking in angular features, and a full round jawline.
Wig styles that suit this shape are those that add volume to the top of the head such as a long ‘A-line’ bob, a hairdo that sits close to your face to slim down your cheekbones, or longer styles that fall below the chin line to help draw the eye vertically.
- Cap Style
100% Hand Tied
This wig cap is the most natural as each hair is tied by hand and allows the hairs the most natural flow, and can be brushed in any direction. The softest cap style to wear, so for wear over longer periods of time would be the best option to choose.
This style of cap creates the appearance of a natural hairline from where the hair is parted, Each hair is tied by hand around the crown region, and the rest by machine, which means restyling of the wig can only be carried out through parting.
This is my personal favourite out of all the cap styles, and tends to be the one used by most celebrities like Beyonce. The lace front creates the illusion of a natural hairline at the front of the wig, and gives a very natural appearance.
The basic cap is the most common style of cap, and often the most affordable and durable design. It also allows for greater air ventilation keeping the head cooler, and often gives the hair lift with built in volume at the crown.
The quality of your wig is very important INDEED! I know we all have our own budgets, and leading a double life for some of us means that we can’t be spending all our money on just one very expensive item. I’m sure if you were able to choose the best quality of wig and budget was no issue, then you would go straight for the Human hair wig. But they cost hundreds of pounds and upwards, and would only really be something to consider if you lived full time as a woman.
Above is a simple example of the differences in quality that you have to be looking out for when purchasing a wig. In an ideal world you would be able to walk into the store and try it on and see the quality right before your very eyes. One was to go about that is to shop in areas that tend to cater for drag queens, or in the gay neighbourhoods of your city where the staff don’t bat an eyelid when they see a guy trying on a wig. All the wigs I have bought were via online sites, some that were recommended to me by friends, but I have also bought wigs from eBay.
From looking at the images above, you can see how the good quality of wig has a light shimmer to it like natural hair, as opposed to the bad quality thats almost reflecting the light like a shiny material. The other aspect of the quality is how the hair lies, allowing it to be styled a lot more easily then the poorer quality wigs which tend to snag and knot more often.
So when it comes down to creating a great overall look, choosing the right wig is one of the crucial elements. Cross Dressing is very much like putting together a recipe, and you have to make sure that each element enhances your look. For me its been very much a personal journey, and this simple list give you the tools to find the perfect wig for your look.
Feel free to add your own comments and opinions to the post. 😉
One of the most important areas of being a cross dresser is over coming the battle of the hair. Some guys are born with a natural amount of hair, others have to deal with a dark rug like covering, no matter what level you are you have to remember even women go to the effort of keeping their skin smooth. The greatest challenge for us part time girls is, we have to be careful of becoming so smooth that our wives, girlfriends or even our workmates and friends begin to notice it. Although you may be able to get away with the “I’m going for the Tom Daley look”.
The best way to attack this area is to make sure you start off with a fresh blade, making sure your tool is as sharp as possible helps. So perhaps consider buying some cheap throw away plastic razors. And the key is to shave twice, or more if necessary and make sure that you use shaving gel to get the best contact.
People have suggested that the best lotion to use for shaving is Head and Shoulders shampoo as it contains I high level of silica which makes for a closer shave. A good tip is to know your face well, and learn the direction of your hair growth by running your hands over your face prior to starting. After your first shave with the grain is complete, rinse off, and run your hand over your face to check for the areas still with hair. Faces can have some more difficult to reach areas, and those will be the places that need more effort to get smooth. For me personally they tend to be around the edge of my mouth, chin, and two parts of my neck.
DONT forget to shave all the way down to the collarbones, and make sure you remove all hair, which included those soft cheek hairs. After all shaving has been done, finish up with a light application of moisturiser to rehydrate your skin prior to applying any makeup.
Hands and Arms:
A great quote comes from Romeo and Juliet, “It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part”
So if you look closely at the ladies, you will notice how their hands are hairless and their arms are either smooth or at most covered lightly with fine soft hairs. Your best tool for keeping your hands hair free, as well as your arms is to use a cheap beard trimmer to quickly remove the hairs. If you are unable to shave your arms you can camouflage by wearing longer sleeve tops, with high necks. Depending on the cut of the dress you can still achieve a sexy stylish look.
Always remember to shave up slightly further then the cuff of the sleeves incase your arm becomes exposed. In case you are a fairly hairy guy, then the best method is to use the attachments on the trimmer to shave a little each week, and slowly reduce it to nothing over a period of time. Again when it comes to shaving, touch as well as sight will help to make sure you don’t leave any sneaky hairs behind.
Every cross dresser I know wants to show of her legs, and its pretty much the same method as taking care of your arms.
Again you can use the trimmer and reduce your leg hair over a period of time in order to not make it so noticeable. If you are quite sporty then you can get away with the excuse that being less hairy makes you a better athlete, especially if you are into swimming.
If your legs are over hairy, and you have some nicks and veins showing, you can use a pair of beige tights as a foundation underlay to what you wish to wear on top. The added benefit of this technique is you can find a slightly tighter pair of tights, such as the kind that dancers use and they can help with pulling in your tummy, and creating a more natural feminine look to your crotch. On top of the foundation tights you can go ahead and wear whatever style, or colour of tights you wish to do so. The only situation where you may not wish to wear tights is with peep toe heels, so if you are slightly on the hairy side you can match them up with a nice pair of fitted skinny jeans.
When it comes to your chest you only have two options, either wear clothes that keep it covered, or just shave it all off either using a shaver or trimmer depending on how smooth you wish to go. If you are going to be taking pics in your undies, or having a little fun then shaving is a must!
The Other Bits:
Again like the chest, its up to you if you want to keep this area completely smooth, and down to whether or not you can afford to. From personal experience, dressing can be greatly enhanced by having a completely smooth body as it does create a much more sensual feeling when dressed.
